Welcome to the website of the
Economic History research group
The Economic History research group started in 1970. The research group was one of the first history research groups in Belgium to focus on the reconstruction of quantitative time series on the Belgian economy and to use economic tools in historical research.
The research group, headed by Professor Erik Buyst, is working on various projects:
- Business History: with publications on e.g. the General Bank, CERA (a savings bank), Sidmar, Barco, the National Bank of Belgium, BASF and GIMV.
Eline Poelmans prepares a Ph.D. on the history of competition policy in the ECSC and EEC in the 1950s and 1960s;
Peter Van der Hallen prepares a Ph.D. on the history of the Belgian food industry, 1880-1980;
Kristof Lowyck works on the history of the VDAB (Flemish Public Employment Service).
- Macroeconomic History: the workgroup co-operates with the Cambridge Group for the History of Population and Social Structure to reconstruct the occupational structure of Belgium in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Erik Buyst is the Belgian member of the ESF Research Networking Programme 'Globalizing Europe Economic History Network': http://www.esf-globaleuronet.org/
- Analysis of Housing Policy: Erik Buyst is responsible for the unit 'housing' of the Flemish Policy Research Centre Housing and Space.
